ANCD media initiative
The media is a powerful vehicle by which to convey messages, and
a common means for people to obtain information on issues that
lie outside their own frames of reference or experience. It is
also true that government policy is impacted on by public opinion.
For these reasons the ANCD believes it is important that there
is an effort made to increase the level of sophistication and accuracy
in the reporting of drug and alcohol related issues in the media.
Accordingly, the ANCD conducted an initiative that addressed
a number of issues that relate to the media reporting of drug and
alcohol issues. This project was completed in December 2002.
As a result of this project, the ANCD has commissioned a follow
up project that aims to develop two sets of key principles.
The first set will be for the media in relation to the reporting
of drug and alcohol issues. The second set will be for the
drug
and
alcohol sector in working with the media to achieve better
reporting of drug and alcohol issues.
