Welcome assistance for non-government organisations

The Australian National Council on Drugs (ANCD) today welcomed the announcement by the Federal Treasurer, Peter Costello and the Parliamentary Secretary for Health, Christopher Pyne to give a number of non-government organizations mainly specialising in residential drug and alcohol treatment services special grants to assist in refurbishment and infrastructure costs.

The Chair of the ANCD, Dr John Herron was present with Mr Costello and Mr Pyne when the announcement was made and stated: "The work done by non-government organisations to assist and provide treatment for people with serious drug and alcohol problems provides a tremendous service for the people involved, their families and the wider community. Whilst these organisations often get assistance from governments and the community to deliver treatment, rarely do we see them get funding to improve the environment in which they provide these services. We shouldn’t underestimate the impact of providing a venue with dignity and some comfort for both the clients and the hard-working staff of these organisations. I congratulate the Government for their contribution today and I would like to also take this opportunity to encourage the business sector to see the value in supporting and assisting these organisations. "

In noting the increasing level of drug and alcohol treatment services provided by the non-government sector, Dr Herron added: “The non-government sector certainly has the ability, enthusiasm and track record to deliver quality drug and alcohol treatment services in Australia. What the ANCD would like to see is more financial support from all levels of government so even more organisations can operate in premises that are positive for clients and just as importantly able to attract and keep staff. We all hope that this is the start of a real trend to support our treatment services in their good work.”
