NIDAC welcomes the South Australian Government’s announcement of the Aboriginal Advisory Council

The National Indigenous Drug and Alcohol Committee (NIDAC) has welcomed the South Australia’s Government’s membership announcement of its new, permanent Aboriginal Advisory Council to consult with Government on Aboriginal matters.

Associate Professor Ted Wilkes, NIDAC Chair commented “Alcohol and other drug misuse can have a devastating impact on Indigenous Australians, especially the children. Ensuring that policies and interventions aimed at reducing the harm caused by alcohol and other drug misuse are not only effective but also developed in consultation with Indigenous communities and their representatives is an urgent priority for NIDAC.

NIDAC congratulates the South Australian government determination to understand the complexity of Indigenous health and social issues by recognising the importance of consultation with Indigenous Australians through the establishment of the Aboriginal Advisory Council.

As the leading voice in Indigenous drug and alcohol policy, NIDAC is of course also pleased to contribute as to the Aboriginal Advisory Board through its co-Deputy Chair, Mr Scott Wilson, Director Aboriginal Drug and Alcohol Council SA.

All NIDAC members congratulated Mr Wilson’s on his appointment and believe that having this expertise on the Aboriginal Advisory Group will provide a valuable contribution to addressing the specific and complex issues that impact on Indigenous communities today.

The NIDAC under the auspice of the ANCD is the principal advisory body to ANCD and the Australian Government on Indigenous drug and alcohol issues.
