NIDAC welcomes announcement of the National Indigenous Health Equality Council members
The National Indigenous Drug and Alcohol Committee (NIDAC) welcomes the Minister for Health and Ageing Nicola Roxon’s announcement of the National Indigenous Health Equality Council members and their quest to deliver better health and quality of life outcomes to Indigenous Australians.
Associate Professor Ted Wilkes, NIDAC Chair comments “The establishment of the National Indigenous Health Equality Council is a positive step to closing the life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. There is sufficient evidence for such a council to begin to reshape the policies of government and enhance Indigenous people’s quality of life immediately. Indigenous health is diminished for nearly every health indicator, a situation that remains unacceptable. I encourage members of this Council to refer to the National Drug Strategy Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People’s Complimentary Action Plan if there is to be meaningful input and direction into the area of alcohol and other drugs.”
NIDAC congratulates the Australian Government on selecting a number of prominent Indigenous Australians and experts drawn from various areas of Indigenous health as members of the Council.
As the leading voice in Indigenous drug and alcohol policy, NIDAC is also pleased that NIDAC member, Mr Romlie Mokak, has been selected for his expertise and believe that having this expertise on the Council will provide a valuable contribution to the government’s commitment to closing the 17 year difference in life expectancy between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.
