Pharmacotherapy Report

The ANCD calls for suitable individuals or groups to determine whether the availability, accessibility and affordability of pharmacotherapy programs for the treatment of opioid dependence in Australia meets demand. As well as examining any problems highlighted by current literature in this area.

The ANCD expects the outcomes from this project will include the following tasks:

a) Engage with relevant stakeholders and key informants on this topic;
b) Assess the currently available data to measure expressed and unmet demand for pharmacotherapy programs in Australia;
c) Utilising currently available data measure the capacity of pharmacotherapy programs in Australia to meet this demand;
d) Review the existing literature to propose different funding and clinical models of pharmacotherapy treatment, particularly in regards to the associated costs incurred by clients, pharmacists and governments in the provision of pharmacotherapy programs to enable expansion of capacity without compromise to safety or quality;
e) Review current literature to identify and measure actual and potential problems in relation to pharmacotherapy programs such as the size, nature, consequences, inappropriate use and diversion of prescription opioids and other issues of significance.
